WHATSAPP FIRES 5 ANDROID UPDATES IN 24 HRS

WhatsApp Android has upgraded to 2.12.294

WhatsApp developers seem to go for outperforming themselves: for the last 24 hrs the messaging app upgraded from version 2.12.189 to version 2.12.194. The latest WhatsApp version for Android boasts new functionality and a few fixed bugs.

New WhatsApp alerts

The most significant update has been made in the alert settings. Under the Media menu, there is now the Notifications window. Now you are free to switch off alerts for any particular chat – for 8 hours, 1 week or 1 year. Also, users now have an option to set notification parameters convenient for them – a tune, vibration length, highlights. They can also switch on/off pop-up messages.

This update will let WhatsApp users separate messages sent by their family members from their better half’s messages or useless chats with friends and put a line between important business talks and images/links shared with friends.

Chats are easier to manage now

Android users will now benefit from the new options of managing their chats. WhatsApp now has a Mark As Unread option. Similar updates were released for version 2.12.80 for Windows Phone this week.

To mark a chat as unread, you just need to find it on the chat list and long press it for several seconds. This will bring up an menu where you will choose the necessary option.

Status of messages within the chat and their chronological order remains unchanged. This option allows a user to remember to get back to a certain conversation if he/she was unable to answer a message when he/she first read it.

Updated Google Drive and adjusted audio calls in WhatsApp

The last two updates are:

  1. A chance to save web traffic when making voice calls (especially good for users who have a traffic limit or a slow Internet access) and slightly improved Google Drive backups.
  2. Now users are notified when data is being backed up on Google Drive. However, you cannot start this process yourself so far. This option was added to the messaging app option list a few months ago but then it was removed.

Who knows, maybe later WhatsApp will decide to put it back again.
