WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform smartphone application that allows exchanging messages, without having to pay for them as you do for SMS. The app is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia. And, of course, messages can be exchanged between smartphones with all the mentioned operating systems. WhatsApp Messenger uses the same Internet rate schedule as e-mail and browsers, so there will be no separate fee for exchanging messages and you will always stay in touch with your friends. The app will stay free only for one year, though. After that, you will be charged $0.99, provided you want to keep using it.

Apart from regular message exchange, WhatsApp users can create group chats, they can send each other an unlimited number of messages, photo, audio and video files.

Total user base: over 800 mn.

Founder: Jan Koum and Brian Acton.
