YouTube is launching its own social network

By Merrie Green

A few weeks ago, several sources reported YouTube was working on a project to introduce more social network features. Yesterday, the company announced it was launching YouTube Community. “Today, we’re introducing a beta version of a new product to help strengthen the bond between you and your viewers, called YouTube Community.  The brand new Community tab on your YouTube channel gives you a new, simple way to engage with your viewers and express yourself beyond video. Now you can do things like text, live videos, images, animated GIFs and more, giving you easier, lightweight ways to engage with your fans more often in between uploads, in real time. Viewers will be able to see your posts in the Subscriptions feed on their phones. They can also opt into getting a notification anytime you post,” wrote Senior Product Manager Kiley McEvoy on the company’s official blog.

At the moment, Community is available in beta version to top creators, such as John & Hank Green (vlogbrothers), AsapSCIENCE, The Game Theorists, Karmin, The Key of Awesome, The Kloons, Lilly Singh, Peter Hollens, Rosianna Halse Rojas, Sam Tsui, Threadbanger и Vsauce3. If you go to, for example, vlogbrothers page, you will see a new Community tab in the upper menu. Users can see posts and leave comments. The comments themselves have not been changed – you still cannot add images or other content to them.

In the coming months, the Community tab will be made available to a wider number of YouTube channels, the company said.
