Daum Kakao Corp, owner of South Korea’s most popular messaging app, KakaoTalk, has announced the release of the app’s new version, packed with some serious innovations. The latest version includes such functions, as Video Call, Chat Backup and Restore. KakaoTV – a mobile social platform for videos – can be considered to be the most radical introduction.
KakaoTalk engineers weren’t nearly the first to add video calls. Anyway, the function is available to every app user, regardless of the OS or the device they’re using. Moreover, calls between users are absolutely free. According to corporation representatives, this function will also be useful for people with impaired hearing.
KakaoTalk’s leading project manager, Derrick Park, said that the company hopes that the introduction of video calls will take our users’ communication with friends, family – the most important people – to a new level. However, the team’s not complacent and continues to work on leaving users with many positive emotions from communication.
To make a video call, you must go to the profile page of the user that you want to contact and tap Free Call. Next you will see the additional menu where you can choose either a regular voice call, video call or a new function. Also, you can start a call while chatting by clicking the “+” icon to the left of the text field.
Four filters are included in video calls, aimed at making communication more fun.
Additionally, developers presented the chat restoration function – Chat Backup and Restore. This function allows you to save your KakaoTalk conversation history and then restore it after reinstalling the application.
The chat history of Android device owners will be stored directly on their devices. Apple owners, on the other hand, will store chat history on the iCloud, as usual. The archive will become available after you reinstall the app on a device with the same phone number. However, it will be up for only three days, in line with the demands made to user data security. The save chat history button is located in Settings.
The most important innovation is KakaoTV. It is a mobile social video service that allows users to share and watch videos in the process of communicating in chat rooms. So far, the service is available exclusively in South Korea.
According to the developers, KakaoTV launch marks the beginning of a new development stage of the messaging app. #Search is KakaoTalk’s next big innovation. This feature allows to look for something on the Internet, without leaving KakaoTalk chats.
