WhatsApp’s latest update is all about helping people express themselves better. The app now allows users to add text formatting to your messages, which includes bold, italics and strikethrough. The new update is bringing WhatApp even closer to a full word processing app, similar to Microsoft Office.

Users won’t find a special button to click on in order to enable the new feature. However, it is quite easy to learn the format options – all you need is to remember the keyboard commands.

To make the text bold, a user must use an asterisk (also known as the * symbol) on both sides of the word or a phrase. Example: *Are you there?*

To use italics requires putting an underscore around the words. Example: _Wanna go catch a movie tonight?_.

Finally, to use strikethrough, a user needs to put in a tilde (a wavy dash ~). Example: I ~don’t~ know.

Furthermore, it is possible to combine the formatting options at the same time by just including several symbols at once.

WhatsApp also added the feature of sharing documents from your Google Drive.
