Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel announced several major news for the company. “Today we are changing the name of our company to Snap Inc. When we were just getting started it made sense to name our company Snapchat Inc., because Snapchat was our only product! Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product – but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand. We decided to drop the “chat” and go with Snap Inc!,” he wrote on the company’s official blog. The company launched in September 2011 and has since grown into the one of the most popular communication apps with some 100 mn daily active users.
Spiegel also noted that changing the name would make it easier for people to find more relevant information about products, which makes sense as the company moves into hardware and other ventures.
In another blog post, Snap Inc. announced introduction of a new product – wearable glasses. “We’ve been working for the past few years to develop a totally new type of camera. We call it Spectacles! Spectacles are sunglasses with an integrated video camera that makes it easy to create Memories,” the company said. The glasses feature a small wireless video camera that shoots video in a new circular video format to be viewed full screen on any device and in any orientation and a single charge is enough to last a whole day. They are available in three different colors. Spectacles connect directly to Snapchat via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi that allows to wirelessly add Snaps to Memories.
The company promises that the Spectacles will be available soon.
