The Indian messenger Hike is not going to give up its positions in the local market. This conclusion can be made looking at the recent update which added voice calls to the list of the messenger’s options.
This new feature is pretty obvious, since just three weeks ago Hike absorbed Zip-Phone. This step made Hike an equal competitor to Viber, Line, Facebook Messenger, and WeChat, all of which have been offering the voice call feature for a long time already.
It should be clear that this way Hike is snapping at the heels of WhatsApp, whose Indian audience is over 70 million active users. WhatsApp promised voice calls as early as Q1 2015 and so far they haven’t kept the promise. Users hate being kept waiting. This is why Hike may well lure over to the side of evil all users of WhatsApp.
So far calls are available only for Android (90% of users). For iOS and Windows Phone this option will appear by the end of the quarter.
